Estimate how much paint you need and what it will cost for your Ontario home — in seconds. Choose your home type, select a price tier, and get an instant budget breakdown.
This free paint cost calculator helps Ontario homeowners quickly estimate the amount of paint needed and the likely cost for an interior painting project. Simply select your home type (or enter custom dimensions), choose how many coats you plan to apply, pick a paint price tier, and the calculator does the rest.
All estimates are based on standard painting practices and Ontario market pricing as of 2024–2025. Use this tool to get a ballpark figure before shopping or calling a contractor — not as a final quote.
The home type presets use typical Ontario floor plan dimensions to estimate total wall area. Doors and windows are automatically deducted using average counts per home size. These are approximations — for a custom layout, use the manual dimension inputs instead.
| Home type | Approx. size | Rooms counted | Openings deducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🏢 Studio / bachelor | ~37 m² | 1 room | ~1.9 m² |
| 🏠 1 bedroom apt | ~60 m² | 3 rooms | ~4.6 m² |
| 🏠 2 bedroom home | ~93 m² | 5 rooms | ~7.4 m² |
| 🏠 3 bedroom home | ~130 m² | 7 rooms | ~11.1 m² |
| 🏠 4 bedroom home | ~186 m² | 9 rooms | ~14.9 m² |
| 🏟 Townhome (full) | ~149 m² | 8 rooms | ~13.0 m² |
Coverage rate is how much area one gallon (3.78 L) covers per coat. A higher number means the paint is thicker and more opaque — so each gallon goes further and you need fewer cans. Lower-grade paints are thinner, cover less per gallon, and require more product to achieve the same result. The calculator multiplies this rate by your number of coats to work out total gallons needed.
| Option | Rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 32.5 m²/gal per coat | Budget latex — thinner formula, lower opacity. Covers less area per gallon so you'll need more cans. |
| Premium (default) | 37 m²/gal per coat | Mid-range interior latex — good balance of coverage and cost. Most common choice for Ontario homes. |
| High-hide | 42 m²/gal per coat | Thick, high-opacity formula — covers more area per gallon so you need fewer cans. Often self-priming. |
Example: A 3 bedroom home with ~325 m² of wall area, painted with 2 coats using a premium paint (37 m²/gal per coat):
325 m² × 2 coats ÷ 37 m²/gal = ~17.6 gallons → purchase 18 cans.
The three price tiers reflect the real range of interior paint products available at Ontario retailers. Prices are per 3.78 L (1 US gallon) can — the most common can size sold in Canada. No specific brands are referenced; these are category averages only.
| Tier | Price / gallon | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| ★ Budget | ~$32/gal | Entry-level latex. Good for low-traffic rooms or rental properties. |
| ★★ Standard | ~$56/gal | Everyday mid-range paint. Solid coverage, washable finish. |
| ★★★ Premium | ~$86/gal | Professional-grade. Better durability, richer colour, often self-priming. |
Ontario market range: $32–$103 per gallon depending on brand, finish, and colour. Deep or custom colours cost more. Always confirm pricing with your local paint supplier before purchasing.
Labour is optional and toggled off by default. When enabled, cost is calculated based on the total paintable wall area in m².
| Labour option | Rate | Typical profile |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | $16/m² | Independent painter or off-season pricing |
| Ontario average | $21.50/m² | Experienced independent painter, most Ontario cities |
| Experienced | $27/m² | Senior painter, prep & clean-up included |
| Toronto premium | $38/m² | GTA market rate, licensed contractor |
Labour rates vary by city, season, and project scope. City-specific pricing will be added in a future update.
